fence post boots
I don’t have any idea how this practice began. You see fence rows like this all over the midwest and the west, wooden posts bearing the memorials of use. This particular row is along Hwy 1804 between Bismarck and Washburn along the Missouri River. These cat off boots cover the fence posts for any number of practical reasons, but someone, somewhere was the first to do it. Was it to preserve the fence tops? Was it to mark the fence rows? Or was it just someone’s idea of a joke, something to do with their outgrown and outworn boots?
