<p>Summer in North Dakota means at least one ride to the old west town of Medora. It&#8217;s an unparalleled ride in North Dakota, and on August 4, I headed out there to see how successful tourism officials were with their first promoted biker gathering in town.</p>
<div id="attachment_2206" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 274px"><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/hanging-out-bikes-in-medora-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2206" title="hanging out bikes in Medora sgntre wtrmrk" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/hanging-out-bikes-in-medora-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg?w=264&#038;h=179" alt="" width="264" height="179" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Hangin&#039; out in Medora</p></div>
<p>While the event itself was nothing to speak of, the ride, the town and the scenery are always top drawer.  In fact, an ebook to be published next spring of Great North Dakota rides will highlight Medora as one of the great rides in the state. <a title="Kickstands Up" href="http://www.kickstandsupnd.com" target="_blank">(kickstands up)</a></p>
<div id="attachment_2207" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 259px"><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/ridiing-in-to-trnp-sgntre.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2207" title="Ridiing in to TRNP sgntre" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/ridiing-in-to-trnp-sgntre.jpg?w=249&#038;h=150" alt="" width="249" height="150" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Riding in to TRNP</p></div>
<p>Shooting bikes in Medora on this day was one of my favorite shoots of the summer.  I positioned myself where ever I thought I&#8217;d catch a motorcycle riding in or out of town. I didn&#8217;t get there until mid-to late afternoon, so I only had an hour or so to shoot. BIG MISTAKE.  There is no hurry-up in Medora.</p>
<div id="attachment_2205" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 234px"><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/banjo-player-sgntre.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2205" title="banjo player sgntre" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/banjo-player-sgntre.jpg?w=224&#038;h=153" alt="" width="224" height="153" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">A Medora Street Musician</p></div>
<p>Don&#8217;t make the same mistake. Take your time, enjoy the Theodore Roosevelt National park, ice cream on main street, or even the local variety of a street musician. <a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/trike-past-cowboy-museum-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2209" title="trike past cowboy museum sgntre wtrmrk" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/trike-past-cowboy-museum-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg?w=243&#038;h=172" alt="" width="243" height="172" /></a></p>
<p>The North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame and the remnants of the Medora Packing plant tell a story around which you can wrap your mind and imagination, harkening back to a romantic period of Americana.</p>

<p>You don&#8217;t have to go far outside of the North Dakota Capitol City to find a different kind of busy intersection.  A local gang hanging out under the street sign, looking for trouble doesn&#8217;t have the same meaning in North Dakota as in other places.</p>
<p>Street signs are abundant any where people are moving &#8212; they have to know where they&#8217;re going.  And that&#8217;s true out in Morton County, just west of Bismarck. If you take some of the local roads you&#8217;ll find you are directed down the road to households within the same extended family &#8212; all building their legacy on the prairie &#8212; with the help of mother cow and her calves.  At least I think they were there to help.  I didn&#8217;t bother them. That cold icy stare was enough to keep me in my truck.</p>
<p>In this July jaunt through the hills of west river (Missouri River) North Dakota I had no idea where I was going, or where I was and frankly the street signs didn&#8217;t help much, so eventually I turned around, but not until I brushed by a bit of isolated civilization in the wide open pasture and grazing of western North Dakota.   It&#8217;s a good part of my portfolio, shooting this model I love to photograph &#8212; North Dakota.<a title="Mykuhls Photography" href="http://www.mykuhlsphotography.com" target="_blank"> Mykuhls Photography</a></p>

<p>A traditional event &#8212; competition much like the Wing Rodeo I wrote about last week &#8212; only different.</p>
<div id="attachment_2189" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 198px"><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/hill-climb-people-4.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2189 " title="Hill Climb people 4" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/hill-climb-people-4.jpg?w=188&#038;h=151" alt="" width="188" height="151" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Dakota Riders</p></div>
<p>The annual Father&#8217;s Day Hill climb by the Dakota Riders at Valley City pits local riders against each other and nature &#8212; in this case, a hill.  The goal for the smaller bikes is to see how far up the hill they can get.  The larger more powerful bikes challenge each other to get to the hill the fastest.  In all cases, it&#8217;s man and machine against nature &#8212; this hill.</p>
<p><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/jun192011_2424.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2192" title="Jun192011_2424" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/jun192011_2424.jpg?w=230&#038;h=152" alt="" width="230" height="152" /></a>It&#8217;s a subculture of note, these North Dakotans who gather at the base of the hill to socialize and to watch the events.  They share a commonality of a love of motorcycles and the motorcycle lifestyle.  But that&#8217;s about where it ends because they come in all sizes and shapes.</p>
<div id="attachment_2188" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 133px"><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/hill-climb-people-3.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2188" title="Hill Climb people 3" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/hill-climb-people-3.jpg?w=123&#038;h=186" alt="" width="123" height="186" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Magi</p></div>
<div id="attachment_2191" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 208px"><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/jun192011_2375.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2191" title="Jun192011_2375" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/jun192011_2375.jpg?w=198&#038;h=131" alt="" width="198" height="131" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Cheetah Chopper</p></div>
<p>Still, a warm Sunday afternoon, good people good entertainment and good competition make the Fathers Day Hill Climb one of my annual events.  I used to shoot the competition and that only.</p>
<p>Now I see there&#8217;s a whole lot more to the event, and that&#8217;s the people, and in some cases the motorcycles.  It&#8217;s not a drunk fest like some motorcycle events, it&#8217;s much more family oriented so there are plenty of good photo ops.</p>
<p><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/jun192011_2445.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2193" title="Jun192011_2445" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/jun192011_2445.jpg?w=210&#038;h=140" alt="" width="210" height="140" /></a>Sometimes I think as a photographer I forget to look at the whole picture. I get so focused I miss the best stories to be told by photo &#8212; the people and the crowds.</p>
<p>You can check out more images of the Hill Climb in the photo garage at <a title="Kickstands Up" href="http://www.kickstandsupnd.com">www.kickstandsupnd.com </a></p>

<p>I love the Wing Rodeo &#8212; named after the little burg where the event has been held for decades.  It&#8217;s as down-home Americana as you can get.  Cowboys and cowgirls from around the region gather to compete not only against each other but against the critters they ride and rope.</p>
<div id="attachment_2175" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/06-11-11-wing-rodeo-bronc-rider-2-bw-sepia-sgntre.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2175" title="06-11-11 Wing Rodeo bronc rider 2 bw sepia sgntre" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/06-11-11-wing-rodeo-bronc-rider-2-bw-sepia-sgntre.jpg?w=300&#038;h=200" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Ride &#039;em cowboy</p></div>
<p>This year, the weather was better than some years when snow and rain made a mess of things.  This year, warm sunny weather gave competitors a brilliant day.  Even the broncs felt invigorated.  Not one of the cowboys beat the broncs to stay in the saddle til the buzzer.</p>
<p><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/06-11-11-wing-rodeo-woman-2-bw-sepia-sgntre.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2179" title="06-11-11 Wing Rodeo Woman 2 bw sepia sgntre" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/06-11-11-wing-rodeo-woman-2-bw-sepia-sgntre.jpg?w=240&#038;h=300" alt="" width="240" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>I and may camera spent a couple hours at the rodeo until the clouds moved in and I lost my natural light.   The natural light of the golden hour was awesome, but those dang clouds turn even the nicest golds in to blues.</p>
<p>Keeping in mind the contest of the down home old fashioned event, in post processing I turned a few of the images into something more appropriate for the event.</p>

<p>Spring 2011 is historic for its wetness, beyond anything every recorded in North Dakota.  In the prairie pothole region of North Dakota between Steel and Devils Lake, up through Hurdsfield, the saying is, &#8220;You can&#8217;t get there from here.&#8221;  Even if you&#8217;re in the farm house, you can&#8217;t get to the barn.  I&#8217;m standing on the road to the farm house, and I can&#8217;t get there either.</p>
<div id="attachment_2163" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 344px"><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-17-11-flooded-road-sgntre.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2163" title="05-17-11 flooded road sgntre" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-17-11-flooded-road-sgntre.jpg?w=334&#038;h=221" alt="" width="334" height="221" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Hwy 36 flooded at Wing</p></div>
<p>It&#8217;s true everywhere.  In the morning I drove down this road and the water was lapping at the shoulders.  By evening, it was deep over the road and I couldn&#8217;t get the last 23 miles home.</p>
<div id="attachment_2166" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 250px"><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-30-11-kids-sandbagging-sgntre.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2166" title="05-30-11 kids sandbagging sgntre" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-30-11-kids-sandbagging-sgntre.jpg?w=240&#038;h=300" alt="" width="240" height="300" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Kids sandbagging</p></div>
<p>Of course what was an inconvenience for me was a disaster for many. That&#8217;s why sandbagging became the social event of Spring 2011 in Bismarck.  You can bet when these youngsters are grandparents, they&#8217;ll be telling their kids about the flood of 2011 when the Missouri River topped all historic levels.  The town of Bismarck and area residents turned out to shovel sandbags.  I borrowed a neighbor&#8217;s trailer and hauled sandbags to folks who were fighting the Muddy Mo.  But if it weren&#8217;t for the hundreds of volunteers at the sandbag sites, there&#8217;s be no way homeowners could protect their homes from the 500-year level flood.<a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-30-11-filling-sandbags-sgntre.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2165" title="05-30-11 Filling sandbags sgntre" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-30-11-filling-sandbags-sgntre.jpg?w=300&#038;h=209" alt="" width="300" height="209" /></a></p>
<p>From the northwest corner of the state at Williston through central North Dakota, down to South Dakota, the story was the same.  Too much water.  The Army Corps of Engineers held back as much water as it wanted at the Corps dams, Sakakawea, Fort Pierre and Chamberlain until the river threatened the dams.  Then came the big releases that flooded downstream cities such as Bismarck and Mandan.</p>
<p>Though the sign was in the perpetually flooded town of  Devils Lake when I drove through there it summed up the feelings of most people &#8212; just add a few more zeros to the capacity of the requested ark.</p>
<p>Now as you look back to the spring of 2011 &#8212; what word would you use to describe it?  I already used the word &#8220;wet.&#8221; Your turn.</p>

<p>It sure can be pretty, the full moon, the still water, and the bridges over the Red River, but as spring 2011 winds down and summer is headed to North Dakota, there is still plenty of water &#8212; or as some would say, &#8220;water under the bridge.&#8221;</p>

<p>And indeed there is water under every bridge in Grand Forks in May 2011.  The East Grand Forks Recreation Trail goes now where, suitable only for scuba divers.</p>
<p>The Sorlie Bridge is a landmark in Grand Forks and all of North Dakota. There are few if any bridges like it.  In order to accommodate the freeze-thaw cycle that causes steel to expand and contract, as well as to accommodate the traffic on the bridge, it is built on railroad wheels that move with the bridge in it&#8217;s seasonal changes.</p>
<div id="attachment_2156" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-sorlie-bridge-wheels-sgntre.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2156" title="05-16-11 Sorlie Bridge wheels sgntre" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-sorlie-bridge-wheels-sgntre.jpg?w=300&#038;h=199" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Sorlie Bridge</p></div>
<p>Near the Sorlie Bridge, along the Red River on this spring evening people gather at one of the more popular watering holes in East Grand Forks.  They&#8217;re anticipating summer. ready to ride through the bridge across the swollen water on their bicycle.<a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-bike-thru-the-bridge-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2152" title="05-16-11 bike thru the bridge sgntre wtrmrk" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-bike-thru-the-bridge-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg?w=300&#038;h=165" alt="" width="300" height="165" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-two-on-parked-motorcycle-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2157" title="05-16-11 two on parked motorcycle sgntre wtrmrk" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-two-on-parked-motorcycle-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg?w=199&#038;h=300" alt="" width="199" height="300" /></a>Or next to the bridge, they park their motorcycles while grabbing a beverage along the river, then heading out for a evening&#8217;s chilly ride.  They&#8217;re excited to see spring, even if they&#8217;re a bit concerned about all the water.  <a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-dog-in-pickup-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2153" title="05-16-11 Dog in pickup sgntre wtrmrk" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-dog-in-pickup-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg?w=260&#038;h=172" alt="" width="260" height="172" /></a>On this particular evening, even the dogs are out, well sorta out.  They&#8217;re in their master&#8217;s truck while he and his family enjoy a night along the river.  These dogs are particular friendly and have a nose for the camera&#8230;well almost, until I stepped just out of the wet sniffer.<a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-dog-up-close-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2154" title="05-16-11 dog up close sgntre wtrmrk" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-dog-up-close-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg?w=199&#038;h=300" alt="" width="199" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>I had already eaten and now was wandering the parkway looking for a way to capture the swollen river.  The sun set before I got out of there, and headed back to my motel for the night.  <a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-headlights-through-the-bridge-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2155" title="05-16-11 headlights through the bridge sgntre wtrmrk" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-16-11-headlights-through-the-bridge-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg?w=300&#038;h=199" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a>But before I left, I had to capture the image you see at the top of this blog, and the one that ends this blog, the traffic across the landmark Sorlie Bridge.</p>
<p>Have you been to Grand Forks and enjoyed the summer evening next to the Red River?  It&#8217;s a nasty beast as residents can tell you, and as you can survey the rebuild from the 1997 flood.  But on this night, though flooding it was peaceful.  How&#8217;s it when you are there?</p>

<p>Music runs in this family.  Dirty Word is a fun talented regional bar band.  Well, actually a cut above most bar bands because even though their music is mostly covers, they put their own twists to the songs they do, their own arrangements if you will. <a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/01-21-11-little-girl-sings-with-dirty-word-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2137 alignleft" title="01-21-11 little girl sings with Dirty Word sgntre wtrmrk" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/01-21-11-little-girl-sings-with-dirty-word-sgntre-wtrmrk.jpg?w=300&#038;h=199" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a>That tells me the band members are talented. More so, to see the lead singer and his daughter together on the stage tells me the talent is in their DNA.  For just a couple songs at Burnt Creek, a dance bar north of Bismarck, dad and daughter entertained the crowd.  She not only has talent, but has poise and confidence &#8212; enough to stand alone to sing to a building full of respectful and admiring adults.</p>
<p>After a couple of songs, off she went, out the back door &#8212; I assume to the motel where her mother or other caretaker was waiting. After all, though it was 9 p.m. when she was on stage, it&#8217;s still late for a girl of her age.  From then on, the crowd danced to and was entertained by the good music of Dirty Word.  <a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/01-21-11-dirty-word-sgntre.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2136" title="01-21-11 Dirty Word sgntre" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/01-21-11-dirty-word-sgntre.jpg?w=300&#038;h=199" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a>It&#8217;s a Minneapolis band that is too good for little smokey bars and clubs, but probably not good enough to hold the stage at a festival or other music event such as 10K lakes.  If you get the chance however, pay the cover charge and check out Dirty Word.  I endorse the band on a cold winter night. It will get you out of the cabin, down the trail, in to humanity for an evening.</p>
<p>Bands seem to flourish in the winter in Bismarck.  Take Midnight Noise Orchestra.  These guys have been parts of other bands and they&#8217;ve come together for a year or two now, entertaining at local venues, usually free.  No cover charge. They play at street festivals and other artistic and open venues.  They hold your attention and keep you coming back for their own tunes.  They&#8217;re a little bit of a jam band, folk, reggae, rock, jazz, blues band. Each song does not sound like the next song, the next song, the next song&#8230;.  They&#8217;re original and entertaining.</p>
<p>On this night, I caught Midnight Noise Orchestra at Captain Freddie&#8217;s in Mandan.  The bar caters to a young crowd and the river crowd &#8212; even has it&#8217;s own dock for Missouri River boaters to stop for a brew.  Since there&#8217;s not much of a boat crowd in the winter, music brings in the patrons.  Midnight Noise does it well.<a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/01-18-10-mno-at-cpt-freddies-with-signature-wtrmrk.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2134 alignleft" title="01-18-10 MNO at Cpt Freddies with signature wtrmrk" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/01-18-10-mno-at-cpt-freddies-with-signature-wtrmrk.jpg?w=300&#038;h=199" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a></p>
<p>I like shooting bands. I hope to put together an entire portfolio of my photographs of local musicians. They&#8217;re talented, but don&#8217;t have much marketing to take them up the ladder of success. I can, however, provide them with a few good shots for their own portfolio.  In the mean time, I get stretched as a photographer.  It&#8217;s not easy working with low light situations &#8212; changing colors of the stage lights, and fast moving people. I&#8217;ve found that setting my white balance to &#8220;auto,&#8221;  cranking up the ISO to about 1,200 and opening up my aperture as far as it will go allows me to use a slightly faster shutter speed to freeze the players.</p>
<p>Not only that, I get to enjoy the good music, connect with band members &#8212; and get a break from cabin fever.  Bismarck-Mandan has an abundance of talented musicians, so cabin fever will have an abundance of opportunity for relief.  What about you? Are you more likely to catch a good musical group in the winter or the summer?</p>

<p>I met Lilly and her mother Ravae at the playground at Gateway Mall in Bismarck.  The little girl was not feeling well, but you couldn&#8217;t tell. She was alert, personable and downright cute.</p>
<p>So while mother and daughter played, I kept up with them, shooting them with a shallow depth of field and as much light as I could force in that comfortably dark shopping mall.</p>
<p>In the end, I think we did quite well. Ravae and Lilly will have keep sakes from this visit to the playground.<a href="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/1-10-11-rl-3-sepia-white-vignette-to-nothing.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2117" title="1-10-11 R&amp;L 3 sepia white vignette to nothing" src="http://northdakota365.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/1-10-11-rl-3-sepia-white-vignette-to-nothing.jpg?w=300&#038;h=240" alt="" width="300" height="240" /></a></p>

<p>We leave 2010 with a recurring theme &#8212; local musicians.  It&#8217;s been an unexpected pleasure this year to shoot the bands and musicians I&#8217;ve hooked up with such as these fellows.  On the left,Weston Shick. On the right Arnold Jordan.  (I have yet to be introduced to the guitarist in the middle.)</p>
<p>North Dakota is blessed with rich musical talent.  I think it is because there are people in this culture who realize if there&#8217;s going to be entertainment here, they have to make it. So, they make entertainment for themselves and for us.</p>
<p>For my part, I try to capture not only the moment as it existed, but add to it in a bit of a creative burst of energy, my own interpretation of the moment with processing and framing.  That&#8217;s the entertainment I make for myself.</p>
<p>There are few places for them to perform, but the East 40 Chophouse in Bismarck is one.  The lounge with it&#8217;s cozy atmosphere and warm fireplace is a great place to enjoy a respite from winter with good friends such as these.</p>
